Free Search Engine Listings

The following links point to the page on various search engines that allow you to manually submit your site for registration at no charge. Some of the more popular search engines are missing from this list because they no longer accept free listings, but do have a pay for listing service.

Although some provide you with a form to fill out allowing you to specify the details of your site, the keywords you would like to be listed under, and the categories to be included in, the major search engines will send out a "spider" to catalogue your site based on its contents and internal structure.

To ensure that the spiders catalogue and index your site effectively it's imperative that the META tag and keyword structure within your site has been made as "search engine friendly" as possible. We can assist you with this prior to registering with the following search engines. Please contact us for more information.

These are just a few of the search engines that you can submit to. The Search Engine category on Yahoo is a good place to start if you're looking for more to use, or if you're after special interest or country specific search engines.

Parallel Search Engines

Some search engines do not have their own database of sites, and simply search the results of other search engines and present a combined result. Examples of this type of search engine include

  • Metacrawler which simultaneously searches Altavista, DirectHit, Excite, Google, GoTo, Looksmart, Lycos and Webcrawler.
  • Dogpile: Altavista, DirectHit, Findwhat, GoTo, Infospace, Looksmart, Lycos, Open Directory and Yahoo.
  • MetaFind: AltaVista, Excite, Infoseek, PlanetSearch, and WebCrawler.
  • Mamma: AskJeeves, Findwhat, Go (Infoseek), Goto, Lycos, MSN, NBCi and Yahoo.

You cannot submit directly to parallel search engines.

How Long Does It Take

The search engines are obviously bombarded with registration requests as the number of sites and pages continues to grow explosively. Most search engines will queue submission requests and deal with them in turn. The following table indicates how long it normally takes for your submission to be processed and for your site to be included in the search engine database.

Alta Vista
1-10 days
Anzwers
1-3 weeks
Excite
Within 2 weeks
Google

HotBot
A few days to 2 months
Lycos

NBCi
